Ensure there is a neutral wire present in the switch box.
What is a neutral wire? Neutral wires can be identified by the following characteristics: observing a bundle of wires, usually colored white, grouped separately from the hot wires in the electrical box. Typically, these neutral wires are not connected directly to the switch, unless it's a smart switch. To confirm their neutrality, use a voltage tester to ensure they carry 0 voltage when compared to the ground wire.Swidget 1P/3Way Switch (S16001WA) Identification and Wiring Guide

Turn on the circuit breaker. Use a non-contact voltage tester to check if voltage is present on the common terminal with the light off.
What is a common terminal? The Common Terminal is typically distinguished by its darker screw color or label. Note that the traveller screws, responsible for connecting multiple switches in a 3-way setup, are typically of the same color and distinct from the common terminal.Swidget 1P/3Way Switch (S16001WA) Identification and Wiring Guide
