Yes. A Swidget outlet with a Wi-Fi (or Z-Wave) insert measures the power the plugged-in device is drawing and shows it in the Swidget app in watts.
The measurement is done by the outlet itself, which senses the current flowing through it. The insert is what reports that reading to the app and to the cloud, so you need both an outlet host and an insert to see power in the app. A control insert on its own does not meter power; the sensing is a function of the outlet.
What you can do with it
- See live power draw for whatever is plugged into the controlled receptacle.
- Trigger automations from power. An outlet can start an automation based on how much power is being drawn, which effectively lets it sense when a plugged-in appliance turns on or off. In the app's automation builder an outlet offers Power Draw (draw crosses a level you set), Power Change (draw changes over a set time), Turned On / Turned Off, and Power Restored triggers, and those can act on the same device or a different one.
Good to know
- The readings are meant as a practical, indicative measure for monitoring and automations, not a laboratory-grade energy meter.
- Very small loads (only a few watts) may not register reliably; a real load needs to be present for a reading to show.
- The physical environment behind the outlet can influence the reading, and make sure the insert is on the latest firmware for the most accurate values.
If your goal is to track cost rather than just watts, you can also enter your electricity rate in the app so usage is shown in dollars.
