Swidget devices are designed to work on AFCI protected circuits. If an AFCI breaker or receptacle trips after one is installed, the cause is usually how the circuit is wired rather than the device itself.

Why it happens

Most AFCIs require the neutral to return to the circuit breaker in order not to trip. In a retrofit, where you are typically replacing thermal magnetic breakers, there is a good chance neutral wires have been tied together at various points around the house. Tracking down all of those runs can be a slow job.

What to do

This is an electrical wiring question, so it needs a licensed electrician. They can confirm whether the neutral for that circuit returns to the breaker as the AFCI requires, and separate a shared neutral where one is found.
