Status, September 1, 2026: the fix is live. The steps to bring your insert back are below.
What happened
Overnight on August 31 a service interruption returned errors to Swidget Wi-Fi Inserts. The insert firmware misread those errors as a fault and reset the inserts to factory settings. Sign-in was restored around midday Eastern, but an insert that had already reset does not come back on its own. We are sorry for the disruption. The firmware behaviour that caused the reset has been corrected and will ship in an upcoming release.
How to tell if your insert is affected
The insert still appears in the Swidget app but does not respond, and its sensor readings have stopped updating. Some devices also switched themselves on and could not be turned off from the app, and that is part of the same issue.
If a device has switched itself on and you cannot turn it off from the app, the button on the device itself still works. Pressing it turns the load off in the meantime.
Affected: Wi-Fi Inserts running firmware 1.5.32 to 1.6.67. Auto-update is on by default, so most Wi-Fi Inserts were in this range. If you are not sure which version you are on, go by the symptom above.
Not affected: camera inserts, Panasonic WP100PBA fan modules, Z-Wave inserts, newer Wi-Fi Inserts on Provisioning V2, and Swidget outlets and switches with no Wi-Fi Insert in them. If your devices are working normally, there is nothing you need to do.
How to bring your insert back
Do not delete the device or the insert from the Swidget app. The recovery works from the device record that is already there, and deleting it removes what your settings are restored from.
1) Take the insert out of the outlet or switch and push it back in. The LED turns white while it starts up, then flashes green when it is ready to pair. If the flashing stops before you have paired it, pull the insert out and push it back in again.
2) Open the Swidget app and leave the existing device in the app, even though it shows offline. Do not delete or remove it from the app. Then pair the device again the way you did originally by pressing the + icon on the top right and selecting "Search for Devices".
3) When asked for a device name and room, leave the pre-populated name, select a room and press Save. The insert comes back under its previous name and room, with its schedules and automations. Go through any other setup screen as you normally would.
Repeat for each affected insert, one at a time.
If you had already removed the device from the app, pairing still works, but it comes back as a new device and its schedules and automations will need setting up again.
Alexa and Google Home links are kept. If a voice command does not work afterwards, write to us and we will help.
If it does not come back
If the insert does not recover after these steps, or shows no light at all once you push it back in, write to support@swidget.com and we will help you directly.
